Easter (Pascha) in Cyprus!
The Greek Orthodox Pascha is the most luminous feast of Christianity and the greatest feast of Hellenism and the people of Cyprus, who call it, “Lambri” – “the bright One” since it shines with the light of Resurrection that bathes life and all its facets; morals, customs and tradition. As the Services of Holy Week coincide with Spring, the divine Passions seem to relate to the passions and resurrection of Nature and man.
Timetable of Holy Masses: Holy Monday - Holy Thursday at 19:00 Holy Friday - ‘Hours of the morning’ at 07:00 and the Epitaph at 19:00 Holy Saturday - Divine Liturgy at 19:30, the Paschal Vigil at 23:00 and the ‘Kalos Logos’ (Paschal Verses and Greeting) is chanted at midnight. Easter morning - The ‘Vespers of Love’ at 11:00.
FRI, 29 APRIL Good Friday In the morning mass the “Megalae Orae” (Great Hours) is chanted and the un-nailing of the Crucified takes place. After this Service, girls in all churches decorate with flowers the Epitaph (Bier of Christ).
This is one of the most beautiful customs in all Cyprus. In the evening, lamentations are chanted to the dead Christ and the Epitaph is carried in litany through the streets of cities and villages while the church bells toll in a mournful tone.
The litanies take place in all parishes at around 20:00.
SAT, 30 APRIL Easter Saturday
In the morning, during the Matinal Holy liturgy, the so called “first Resurrection” takes place and in Cyprus it is celebrated in a special way. The black veils covering the icons during the Holy Week drop, the priests throw laurel leaves and myrtle to the floor, the faithful bang their pews, the bells toll merrily and the general mood is triumphant. In the evening, at midnight, the Holy liturgy of Resurrection is held in the courtyard of churches.

Easter Day The Service of Paschal Sunday, the Matins and the Holy Liturgy are usually held at midnight of Saturday to Sunday. On the morning of Pascha Sunday the Vespers of Love are celebrated during which the Gospel is read in many languages as an old custom dictates. After the Holy Liturgy all around the island families and friends come together to celebrate; roast on coal lamb on a spit or bake lamb in the oven, crack the red dyed eggs and enjoy “Paschalogiorta” (Easter feasts), the prosperous symbolism of Greek Pascha that comes in the form of cross-buns, Christ bagels, tsourekia and the Easter food par excellence, the flaounes (cheese pies). On Easter Sunday and Monday traditional games are organised in towns and villages.

FRI, 1 - SUN, 3 APRIL Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 2016 The Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour is the most important road cycling event that takes place on the island. In 2015 a record number of 224 participants passed the start line with almost half of the participants coming from abroad. The 2016 event will feature 3 stages with a total distance of 247.4km, of which 191km are timed sections and will pass through the most beautiful scenery and picturesque villages of the region. Labyrinth: Make it New – Art in Action The project is part of the Community Involvement programme, aims to ecologically and aesthetically intervene in various spaces. Through the process of citizen participation in the making of a permanent labyrinth in the “PARAKA” Park and with the guidance of the artists Sergey de Rocambole and Anna Nikolaeva, the improved landscape becomes a space of interaction and coexistence.

Cyprus Tulip Festival
The Cyprus Tulip is the endemic and distinctive flower of the region and particularly of the area that surrounds the village of Polemi. As the community has the privilege to be the only area where the Cyprus tulip grows during the flowering season, every year they organise a Festival that includes music, an exhibition and a nature walk amidst the wild tulips. The festival is organised by the Hellenic Community Council and the association "Friends of Tulip."

Our class Our Class is a play about the events that took place in the Polish city of Jedwabne, when, during World War II and under German occupation, its Catholic residents exterminated the town’s Jewish population. The story follows the lives of 10 schoolmates, before and after the horrific events which changed their lives forever. It’s a play that highlights just how far people will go when they are under pressure, and how sometimes our own actions and sudden decisions can make us fear our own selves. With surtitles in English and Turkish.

This Spanish/Portuguese production, a docudrama directed by Miguel Alcantud, traces the journey of two young boys from Mali across Spain, Portugal, and northern Europe—an odyssey of deceptions and abuses—after they are persuaded to pursue their dream of becoming professional soccer players. WED, 20 APRIL - “Wounded”
Ana is socially awkward and even aggressive towards those people closest to her and whom she loves. She cannot control her self-destructive behaviour which isolates her and makes her suffer feeling tormented and guilty. She is unaware that she suffers from what psychiatrists call Borderline Personality Disorder. Roman Volkov's theatre presents Anna Luchina, Elena Barishnikova and Alyona Starko in the tragicomedy "Songs of Tears" based on the work of Kshishtof Bize. The performance presents the heart-breaking stories of three women representing three generations. The personal problems of a once loving and bonded family, torn each one’s soul apart and destroyed those bonds of happiness. Rated: +16yrs old, in Russian language.

Risky Travels
This significant project, part of the programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017, is a true story that highlights the power that the arts and altruism have in exceeding differences, obstacles and borders. Baki Bogac, an architect and sculptor, found and rescued the artworks of Andy Hadjiadamou, which Andy left in Famagusta in 1974. For 19 years Baki looked after the artworks and returned them to Andy’s family in Pafos in 1993. The project will be presented by the art theorist Thanos Stathopoulos and Baki Bogac.

Sounds of Vienna
The two artists, the Russian Elina Linchevskaya and the Czech Zbynek Maruska, originate from the same generation of pianists who came through the disciplined and structured musical education, which was traditionally taught and made their countries famous for. Archaeological Cultural Heritage of Akamas Peninsula Symposium
A symposium, part of the Akamas project, on the peninsula’s Archaeological Cultural Heritage. Akamas is an important project of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 with several actions that connect culture, history and the environment of Paphos. A reception and a tour will follow the symposium at the Archaeological area of Saint George in Peyia. In partnership with: the Municipality of Pegeia, the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, the Department of Environment, the Director of the Akamas Project and the ICOMOS Cyprus. (In Greek language.)

Bread Feast – The ritual of dough kneading in Pafos
“Bread Feast”, part of the project “Garden of Tastes”, highlights the richness Pafos has in local rituals that include dough kneading. These are often associated with the town, the natural habitat and the local culture. With the sounds of traditional music women from the surrounding communities of Pafos compete and demonstrate their dough kneading skills, while the audience is invited to taste the different types of bread.

“Entre Guitarra y Voz”: Concert for guitar, voice and piano
The concert presented by guitarist Sotiris Kasparides, soprano Annie Trillidou Santi and pianist Ioanna Pettemeridou Pavlou, touches Spanish and Latin American colours and modern classical music. A variety of mainly 20th and 21st century works are going to be performed. Some of the composers are Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Ernesto Cordero, Astor Piazzolla, Toru Takemitsu, Akis Pavlou, Sotiris Kasparides etc.

The Pafos Triathlon
The race is set in the magnificent heart of Pafos touristic area and is the only Triathlon to be held on the West part of the island. A tried and tested flat bike course, secured from traffic, will host a number of individual triathletes and relay teams – swimmer, biker and runner - that will take upon the challenge. In April ambient temperatures are min/max 12-23 C⁰, ideal for a Triathlon, and it is expected that it will be a wetsuit swim, in crystal clear Mediterranean waters. The run course will cover one of the most scenic paths of Pafos, a few steps from the beach taking athletes from the transition area to the Pafos coastal walking and running path and back to the Municipal baths where the finish will occur. Wednesday Night Bike Rides
Pafos Bike Riders, organize regular night rides. The goal is to have fun, exercise, familiarize cyclists with urban mobility and to raise awareness among other drivers. A pleasant route of approximately 20km for all cyclists and suitable for all types of bikes. Those who want to participate are advised to bring flashlights and a helmet.

PAFOS WALK – Strolling around Pafos town centre (Ktima)
In an effort to get visitors acquainted with Pafos Town Centre (Ktima), the newest part of the city of Pafos, the Municipality of Pafos offers visitors the unique experience of a stroll in Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) and a peek into the local everyday life. Through historic references, linked with some very important historic periods including the Medieval, Ottoman, British and modern times, one will ‘walk’ into the past and at the same time discover today’s commercial centre of Pafos. The walk lasts about two and a half hours, including a half-hour break for refreshments.

This significant project, part of the programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017, is a true story that highlights the power that the arts and altruism have in exceeding differences, obstacles and borders. Baki Bogac, an architect and sculptor, found and rescued the artworks of Andy Hadjiadamou, which Andy left in Famagusta in 1974. For 19 years Baki looked after the artworks and returned them to Andy’s family in Pafos in 1993. The project will be presented by the art theorist Thanos Stathopoulos and Baki Bogac.

Sounds of Vienna
The two artists, the Russian Elina Linchevskaya and the Czech Zbynek Maruska, originate from the same generation of pianists who came through the disciplined and structured musical education, which was traditionally taught and made their countries famous for. Archaeological Cultural Heritage of Akamas Peninsula Symposium
A symposium, part of the Akamas project, on the peninsula’s Archaeological Cultural Heritage. Akamas is an important project of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 with several actions that connect culture, history and the environment of Paphos. A reception and a tour will follow the symposium at the Archaeological area of Saint George in Peyia. In partnership with: the Municipality of Pegeia, the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, the Department of Environment, the Director of the Akamas Project and the ICOMOS Cyprus. (In Greek language.)

Bread Feast – The ritual of dough kneading in Pafos
“Bread Feast”, part of the project “Garden of Tastes”, highlights the richness Pafos has in local rituals that include dough kneading. These are often associated with the town, the natural habitat and the local culture. With the sounds of traditional music women from the surrounding communities of Pafos compete and demonstrate their dough kneading skills, while the audience is invited to taste the different types of bread.

“Entre Guitarra y Voz”: Concert for guitar, voice and piano
The concert presented by guitarist Sotiris Kasparides, soprano Annie Trillidou Santi and pianist Ioanna Pettemeridou Pavlou, touches Spanish and Latin American colours and modern classical music. A variety of mainly 20th and 21st century works are going to be performed. Some of the composers are Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Ernesto Cordero, Astor Piazzolla, Toru Takemitsu, Akis Pavlou, Sotiris Kasparides etc.

The Pafos Triathlon
The race is set in the magnificent heart of Pafos touristic area and is the only Triathlon to be held on the West part of the island. A tried and tested flat bike course, secured from traffic, will host a number of individual triathletes and relay teams – swimmer, biker and runner - that will take upon the challenge. In April ambient temperatures are min/max 12-23 C⁰, ideal for a Triathlon, and it is expected that it will be a wetsuit swim, in crystal clear Mediterranean waters. The run course will cover one of the most scenic paths of Pafos, a few steps from the beach taking athletes from the transition area to the Pafos coastal walking and running path and back to the Municipal baths where the finish will occur. Pafos Bike Riders, organize regular night rides. The goal is to have fun, exercise, familiarize cyclists with urban mobility and to raise awareness among other drivers. A pleasant route of approximately 20km for all cyclists and suitable for all types of bikes. Those who want to participate are advised to bring flashlights and a helmet.

PAFOS WALK – Strolling around Pafos town centre (Ktima)
In an effort to get visitors acquainted with Pafos Town Centre (Ktima), the newest part of the city of Pafos, the Municipality of Pafos offers visitors the unique experience of a stroll in Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) and a peek into the local everyday life. Through historic references, linked with some very important historic periods including the Medieval, Ottoman, British and modern times, one will ‘walk’ into the past and at the same time discover today’s commercial centre of Pafos. The walk lasts about two and a half hours, including a half-hour break for refreshments.
